The 2027 Programme, Date by Date

The next edition runs from 29 April to 30 May 2027, with entertainment in downtown Funchal and the flower installations spread across the whole period. The dated pieces are the Palheiro Gardens Golf Classic on 30 April and 1 May, the Wall of Hope on 1 May, the Great Allegoric Flower Parade on 2 and 16 May, the Wall of Solidarity on 7 May, performances by the flower groups on 8 and 22 May, the Flower Classic Auto Parade on 9 May, the Flower Concerts from 13 to 16 May, the Madeira Flower Collection fashion show on 15 May and the Classic Car Revival from 28 to 30 May.

The 2028 edition is already published: 4 to 28 May, with parades on 7 and 21 May.

What the Wall of Hope Actually Is

On the Saturday morning that opens the festival, children are invited to place a flower on a wall built for the purpose on Avenida Arriaga, as a symbolic appeal for peace. The Wall of Solidarity, a week later on the same avenue, is built by people from social solidarity institutions. Both are free to watch and both are short, so they fit around a morning in Funchal old town.

The tourism board also runs a Flower and Regional Products Market during the festival, with regional sweets, bolo do caco, cider, craft beer and poncha. The dishes themselves are explained in typical food and the drink in poncha.

The Parade Route and What a Seat Costs

The published parade itinerary starts at Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro, runs along the north lane of Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses as far as Praça da Autonomia, comes back along the south lane, and finishes at Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro and the Rotunda Harvey Foster. Standing anywhere along it is free.

Visit Madeira states that most events are free to attend and that only seated places to watch the Flower Parade require a paid ticket. No seat price is published on the official page, so none is printed here. Ask at the tourist office on Avenida Arriaga, which is listed on Madeira travel tips.

The Dates and the Two Parades

The 2026 edition ran from 11 to 22 February, with the Solidarity and Children's Carnival on 13 February, the Allegoric Carnival Parade on 14 February and the Slapstick Parade on 17 February. The next edition runs 3 to 14 February 2027, with the Solidarity and Children's Carnival on 5 February, the Allegoric Carnival Parade on 5 and 6 February and the Slapstick Parade on 9 February. For 2028 the calendar gives 23 February to 5 March, with parades on 25 and 26 February.

The two parades are different things. The Cortejo Alegórico is the big costume and float parade through central Funchal. The Cortejo Trapalhão, which takes place on Carnival Tuesday, is deliberately satirical and looser, and Visit Madeira describes it as drawing on cultural heritage rather than choreography.

Outside Funchal

Visit Madeira calls the Carnival itinerant: the celebration reaches each municipality in its own way, so the capital is not the only place to see it. The Festa dos Compadres in Santana opens the Carnival season and is a tradition of more than 50 years, though the event page gives its dates without a year, so no date for it is printed here.

Four Dates on the Calendar, Three Shows on the Event Page

The official calendar lists the Atlantic Festival from 4 to 27 June 2027 and the Madeira International Fireworks Contest on 5, 12, 19 and 26 June 2027, which is four Saturdays. Visit Madeira's own festival page describes the contest as three pyromusical shows on the first three Saturdays of June, about 20 minutes each, seen along the bay of Funchal, followed by two closing shows: one at the Vila Baleira pier on Porto Santo on 23 June and one in Funchal on 26 June.

The two readings agree on the last date and disagree on whether the fourth Saturday is a contest night or the closing show. Plan around the Saturdays and you are covered either way. The 2026 edition ran 5 to 28 June, with shows on 6, 13, 20 and 27 June.

The Rest of the June Programme

The festival is not only fireworks. Through June, from Thursday to Sunday, there are sunset sessions in the garden beside Praça do Povo with music and a stand of regional food. The programme also carries multimedia shows, circus shows, the Regional Arts Week and the Funchal Lions Club bread fair.

A firework night is a late night in the city centre, so read Funchal at night for what stays open, and remember that the seafront fills from both ends of Avenida do Mar.

The 2026 Edition and What Comes Next

The 2026 edition ran from 23 August to 13 September. Inside it, the European Folklore Week ran 23 to 27 August, the Madeira Wine Lounge at Praça do Povo ran 27 August to 13 September, the Live Harvest in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos fell on 12 September and the Concerts in the Vineyards were held on 5, 6, 12 and 13 September. The next edition runs 22 August to 12 September 2027, with the Live Harvest on 11 September 2027 and concerts on 4, 5, 11 and 12 September.

The Wine Lounge is the easiest part to walk into: it sits on Praça do Povo in central Funchal with tastings and regional music groups.

The Harvest in Estreito

Visit Madeira describes the Wine Harvest Festival as taking place in the first half of September in the village of Estreito, where the event recreates the work of the harvest. It is the reason to leave the city for a day and see Câmara de Lobos at its busiest.

The drink has a longer story than one weekend, and the lodges in Funchal tell it all year. Blandy's Wine Lodge runs tours from $19.52 (€17), and the H.M. Borges winery guided tour with wine tasting is listed at $23.00 for an hour. Background on the four classic styles is in Madeira wine.

The Lights and the Market Night

The general illumination of the Funchal amphitheatre and the Christmas exhibits in the city centre run from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. Through December there are events in the streets of Funchal almost every day, plus a Christmas market of regional products and an Ethnographic Village at Largo da Restauração.

The night locals name first is the market night at the Mercado dos Lavradores on 23 December, when the market stays open into the small hours. From the second half of December until Christmas Eve, the Missas do Parto bring people to dawn masses, and afterwards the church squares fill with sandwiches of carne de vinha d'alhos and homemade liqueurs.

The New Year's Eve Fireworks

The display is on 31 December, launched over the bay and the amphitheatre of the city. Visit Madeira states that in 2006 the show was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest fireworks display in the world. No official page publishes the number of fireworks or the length of the current show, so neither figure appears here.

The whole hillside is a viewing gallery, which is the practical point: the higher streets of Funchal and the viewpoints above the city see the same sky as the seafront. Getting back down afterwards is the hard part, so read getting around Madeira before the night and expect the Funchal cable car to be closed at that hour.

Epiphany and the Three Kings

The season ends with the Chants of Epiphany. Visit Madeira gives 5 January at 19:00 at Praça do Povo, while the calendar PDF lists the same evening in the Municipal Gardens, so check which venue is announced for the year you travel. The Arrival of the Three Kings follows on 6 January, and tradition attaches it to bolo-rei, the ring cake with a broad bean and a small gift baked inside.

January after that is the quietest stretch of the calendar, which is covered month by month in the best time to visit Madeira.

Nature Festival, 6 to 11 October 2026

The Nature Festival is a programme of nature sports across the mountains, valleys and sea of the island, and it is the next fixed date on the calendar after this page was written. The 2027 edition runs 5 to 10 October and the 2028 edition 3 to 8 October.

Columbus Festival on Porto Santo

The Columbus Festival recreates the 16th century on Porto Santo, where Christopher Columbus lived for a time. Over three days the main streets carry theatrical performances, concerts and a period market. The 2026 edition runs 17 to 20 September and the next one 23 to 26 September 2027.

Getting there is the planning problem, not the festival. The ferry and the fares are covered on Porto Santo, and once on the island the Porto Santo highlights 4x4 tour covers the nine-kilometre beach and the interior in a day.

MIUT, the Madeira Island Ultra Trail

The organiser has announced the 18th edition of the Madeira Island Ultra Trail for 24 and 25 April 2027, a race that crosses the island on the mountain trails. No trail closure information is published with that announcement, so if you plan to walk that weekend, check the IFCN register and notices first. The Only Paid Ticket Anyone Publishes

Across the official event pages read for this page, the single paid item is a seated place to watch the Flower Parade, and no price for it is published. Everything else, the parades themselves, the fireworks, the Wine Lounge, the Christmas lights and the Epiphany concert, is free to walk up to.

The festival itself is free, so the money goes on sleeping, moving and, for the Columbus Festival, crossing to another island.
