Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Madeira

The $20.70 (€18) ticket is always the same price, the operator's site says there is no separate guided-tour ticket and no cheaper garden-only option. It covers three things. First the garden itself, 70,000 square metres of terraced hillside.

Second the Monte Palace Madeira Museum over three floors. Third a Moscatel wine tasting at the Bluehouse Café inside the garden. Children up to 14 enter free with an adult, and visitors aged 15 to 18 may visit unaccompanied.

Schools enter free with registration. One ticket, one payment, and the extras are already paid for, which changes the maths if you were expecting a bare garden admission.

The Museum

The museum spreads over three floors. The ground floor holds minerals, gems and petrified wood, about 700 mineral specimens. The first and second floors show modern and contemporary art, more than 200 pieces from the Berardo Collection.

Guided museum tours are free but must be pre-booked and are for groups only. Note that the palace building itself is not open to the public, so there is no grand interior to tour, the museum is the indoor part.

The Moscatel Tasting

A glass of Moscatel is included at the Bluehouse Café, which sits in the heart of the garden. The café serves sandwiches, wine and beer, and like all the garden's cafés it needs a valid garden ticket to enter. It is a rest stop in the middle of a steep visit, which most legs will welcome by the time they reach it.

The Oriental Gardens

The Oriental Gardens are the garden's tribute to Chinese and Japanese culture, with pagodas, Buddhas, stone lanterns and guardian figures set among the planting. The operator describes them as a place for contemplation, and they are one of the named sections on the garden's own map.

The Tile Panels

The garden holds a collection of tiles from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Two sets of panels are named on the official pages, the History of Portugal and the Adventures of the Portuguese in Japan. Coats of arms, stonework and niches sit among them.

The Cycads And The Big Trees

The cycad collection of the genus Encephalartos holds more than 500 plants representing 30 of the 65 known species of the genus. Around them grow sequoias, magnolias, araucarias and ancient Portuguese olive trees brought from Alqueva, plus azaleas, hydrangeas, proteas and strelitzias.

The Laurissilva Section

A planted section recreates the Laurissilva, Madeira's native laurel forest, which is listed by UNESCO. If you will not walk a levada through the real forest on this trip, this is the version inside a garden.

Koi, Swans, Peacocks And Flamingos

Koi fill the lakes, swans float on the central lake, and peacocks, Carolina ducks and Mandarin ducks walk the paths. Four pairs of flamingos were introduced in 2023 and live in the Poço dos Desejos lagoon. Feeding or touching the animals is not allowed.

Monte Palace has three entrances and three matching ticket offices. The address is Caminho das Babosas 4-A, 9050-541 Funchal. The table below shows which entrance suits which plan, because arriving at the wrong gate on a steep hillside costs time and legs.

By Cable Car, Bus, Taxi Or Car

The cable car leaves from Jardim Almirante Reis beside Funchal's Old Town and reaches Largo das Babosas in 18 minutes, one way $18.37 (€16), return $25.30 (€22). The top station sits next to the garden's cable-car ticket office, so you can walk straight in. Buses 20, 21, 22 and 48 serve Monte from Funchal.

Taxis work too. Drivers will find free parking nearby, though the operator does not publish the number of spaces. On-site payment is by Multibanco, Visa, Mastercard or cash.

The garden keeps long hours, but the entry cutoff at 17:00 and the café closing at 17:30 shape the day more than the closing time suggests. The table gives the published hours, followed by the one conflict worth knowing.

The museum hours conflict is the site disagreeing with itself, so allow slack if the museum is your priority. For the visit itself, the operator advises early morning or early afternoon for the light and cooler temperatures. The garden publishes no altitude figure.

Visit Madeira puts the parish of Monte at about 500 metres above sea level, which is why it feels cooler than Funchal's seafront.

Steep paths slow everything down. Add the museum and the Moscatel tasting and the top of the range fills fast. Pick your plan before you enter, because once a ticket is validated there is no re-entry, so a lunch detour out of the gate is not possible.

The garden is steep historic terrain and access for reduced mobility is limited, the operator is clear about that. A trolley bus guided tour runs between the central lake and the Caminho das Babosas 4 entrance at $5.74 (€5) per adult per trip, which saves the worst of the climb. Accessible toilets sit next to the minerals collection entrance and the Bluehouse Café.

Families get practical help too, pushchair storage at the ticket offices and baby changing facilities. Dogs are allowed on a lead. Wear comfortable shoes, take a hat, sunglasses and a light jacket, which is the operator's own packing advice.

For the ride up, the cable car's boarding areas and cabins are accessible, with one wheelchair per cabin.

You may bring your own food and drink into the garden, just not into the museum, so a picnic is a legitimate way to cut costs. If you buy instead, four outlets share the same hours, 09:30-17:30 daily, and all of them require a valid garden ticket, so there is no eating at Monte Palace without paying entry. The spread runs from light meals at the top of the hill to poncha at a viewpoint.

For $20.70 (€18) you get a large garden, a three-floor museum and a wine tasting, and children up to 14 go free, so a family of two adults and two children under 15 pays $41.30 (€36) in total, our sum of the published prices. The Madeira Botanical Garden, a completely separate garden run by IFCN, costs $11.48 (€10) for visitors over 12. Two adults riding up on the cable car and entering Monte Palace pay $39.00 (€34) each, or $78.10 (€68) for the pair, our sum of the €16 cable car fare plus the €18 entry. If you only want plants and a lower price, the Botanical Garden is the pick, and its own cable car from Largo das Babosas links the two. If you want the tiles, the lakes, the museum and the tasting on one ticket, Monte Palace earns the extra $9.18 (€8), our sum.

The cleanest shape for a day is cable car up in the morning, garden while it is cool, light lunch at one of the cafés, then the toboggan down to Livramento and a walk or ride back into town. That fills a half day comfortably and leaves the afternoon for the Old Town or the market, both near the lower cable car station.
