The Summit Viewpoint

Visit Madeira gives the summit as 1,818 m and calls it the third-highest point on Madeira, behind Pico das Torres at 1,851 m and Pico Ruivo at 1,862 m. From the top, the tourism board lists views over the central mountain massif, Ponta de São Lourenço, Curral das Freiras and, on clear days, Porto Santo. You park at the summit and the viewpoint is steps from the car.

Visit Madeira adds that the sunrise, weather permitting, draws more and more photographers. No fee for the viewpoint itself is published by IFCN or Visit Madeira, and IFCN publishes no parking reservation or paid-parking system for the summit car park. The Trailhead

The same car park is the start of PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, the 6.1 km ridge route to Pico Ruivo on the IFCN register. Since 1 January 2026 that trail, like every classified PR on the island, needs a prior booking on the SIMplifica portal with a fee of $5.17 (€4.50) for non-residents over 12 for the out-and-back to Pedra Rija, or $12.06 (€10.50) for the full one-way crossing. You enter at your slot time in the Pico do Areeiro area.

The IFCN FAQ is explicit that the Pedra Rija gate is not the start. Another trail also leaves the summit, PR3 Vereda do Burro to Ribeira das Cales, run by the Funchal municipality. If a ridge hike is the goal, our Madeira hikes page compares it with the island's other big walks.

Be parked and in place before the time in the table, and give the summit road some margin in the dark. How much margin is our estimate, not a rule: nobody publishes a capacity or a cutoff for the summit car park, so the first cars simply get the spaces. In summer the alarm is early, with sunrise before 07:10 in June and July, while December and January give you 08:02 to 08:10.

Sunset, from 18:03 in December to 21:17 in July, is the fallback if dawn defeats you, and the sunrise hiking transfer is the fallback if the drive does.

Driving It Yourself or Being Driven

If you hire a car, the car hire page covers the rental basics and getting around Madeira puts the mountain drive in context. No public bus to the summit appears in the official sources we hold. If you would rather sleep in the passenger seat, the Pico do Arieiro sunrise tour is a 3-hour viewpoint visit with hotel pickup for $40.00, and hikers continuing on the trail use a transfer instead.

Pico do Arieiro to Pedra Rija and Back

IFCN allows two-way walking only between Pico do Areeiro and the Pedra Rija viewpoint, on a $5.17 (€4.50) ticket for non-residents over 12. This is the stretch to pick if you want the ridge without the logistics of the far end. Along PR1, Visit Madeira describes tunnels dug in volcanic tuff that once sheltered cattle and shepherds, and steep slopes.

Stairway to Heaven is a nickname used online for the rock-cut stairs of this ridge, not an official trail name, and you will not find it on an IFCN sign. It is a mountain path with drops, so read Madeira safety and health before you go.

The Full Crossing to Pico Ruivo, One-Way

From Pedra Rija onward the trail is one-way toward Pico Ruivo. IFCN adopted the rule after a rockfall on the trail and kept it when the calendar restrictions ended. The full ticket costs $12.06 (€10.50) and also covers the PR1.1 and PR1.2 exit trails at no extra fee.

Your car does not come with you. You leave Pico Ruivo by PR1.2 to Achada do Teixeira, 2.8 km, or PR1.1 to Ilha, 8.2 km, and IFCN does not provide or guarantee any transport back to Pico do Areeiro. Visit Madeira describes the route as moderate difficulty with about 3 hours for the crossing, and puts the hardest effort in the final climb to the Pico Ruivo shelter after the steep staircase carved around Pico das Torres.

The scheduled works closed the Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo section on 14 to 17 and 21 to 22 September 2026, so check the IFCN register for your date. The far end has its own logistics, all covered in our Pico Ruivo guide.

• Book your slot on SIMplifica before you go, and enter at your slot time at Pico do Areeiro
• One-way beyond Pedra Rija, so there is no walking back to the summit from there
• Exit by PR1.2, 2.8 km to Achada do Teixeira, or PR1.1, 8.2 km down to Ilha
• No IFCN transport back to your car, arrange a taxi or transfer yourself
• The east branch via Pico das Torres is closed, follow the west branch through the tunnels

Most visitors never need a slot. The viewpoint alone fits into any itinerary, including a daylight stop on the east Madeira tour via Arieiro, Santana and the Laurissilva. Give yourself margin at either end for cloud.

If the trail is the goal, add the slot time, the walk and the exit logistics before you promise anyone a dinner reservation.

By Hire Car

This is the flexible option and the one most sunrise photographers use. IFCN publishes no fee, no reservation system and no capacity for the summit car park, so arrive early and take your chances on space. Roads up here can close: IFCN has announced that the forestry road from Eira do Serrado to Pico do Areeiro closes on 4 October 2026 from 07:55 to 10:08 for the Eco Rally Madeira.

By Transfer or Tour

For the sunrise without the pre-dawn drive, three listed options cover it. The Pico do Arieiro sunrise tour at $40.00 is a 3 hour viewpoint visit, no hiking. The sunrise hiking transfer at $56.00 drops you at the summit for sunrise and collects you later at Achada do Teixeira, which is exactly the shape a one-way PR1 crossing needs. The sunrise and PR1 hike transfer at $38.00 does the same and helps you book the permit, with the IFCN fee paid separately. A taxi is the fourth route, and the taxi page explains how fares work. The Santana taxi rank's number, +351 291 572 540, is printed on the IFCN board at Achada do Teixeira, but no fare is.

The IPMA 1991-2020 normal for Funchal at 58 m gives a mean daily high of 20.0°C in January and 26.8°C in August. No official climate normal is published for the summit in our sources, so no number here. What is certain is that the summit is much colder and more often in cloud than the coast, a fact the IFCN PR1.2 board also prints for the area around Pico Ruivo with the advice to take warm clothing.

Cloud decides if you see the sunrise at all, and reviewers of the sunrise hiking transfer report the summit can be foggy and cold while the coast is clear. Refunds on a trail ticket are only due if IFCN officially closes the trail on your booking date, and a weather warning does not automatically close anything, so a cloudy forecast is your own risk.
