Madeira tours: an open-top jeep on a mountain road above the north coast

Madeira Tours Compared: Jeep Days, Levada Transfers and Boats

Madeira tours on this site run from $19.00 walking tours to a $212.00 tandem paragliding flight, and this page puts every one side by side. Most Madeira island tours sell transport and time, not entry. Almost every stop is free at the gate: viewpoints cost nothing, the Porto Moniz pools are $3.44 (€3), and a levada trail is $5.17 (€4.50) plus a SIMplifica booking. So we also show what the same ground costs without the tour. Start with things to do in Madeira if you would rather build your own days, or with day trips from Funchal. The island overview is on where to start with Madeira.

Quick answer Which tour, what it costs, what you could do yourself

Most Madeira tours sell transport and time, not entry: the stops on a jeep day are free apart from the Porto Moniz pools at $3.44 (€3). Our reading is that a first trip needs at most three excursions. A jeep or minivan day to the north-west at $39.00 to $80.00 buys a driver on mountain roads. A hiking transfer at $36.00 to $56.00 solves parking and the PR1 one-way problem. A boat from Funchal marina from $40.00 is the one tour with no do-it-yourself version. With car hire in Madeira and a confident driver, the land days cost you the gate fees and fuel.

Jeep and 4WD Days to the North-West

These jeep tour Madeira listings all run the west and north-west in open-top vehicles, eight hours each, with hotel pickup from Funchal. None bundles a paid attraction: the pools at Porto Moniz cost $3.44 (€3) at the gate and everything else on the route is free to walk into, so the listed price is really paying for the driver, the vehicle and the pickup.

Which Madeira Tour, by the Time You Have

Most Madeira tours fit into three shapes: a couple of hours in the city, a half day, or a full eight-hour circuit. This table matches the time you have to the tour we would pick from the listings, with the listed platform price and what the same hours would cost you independently, using the official gate and ferry prices.

Start from your schedule, not from the tour list. A cruise passenger with one day ashore needs a different answer from a hiker with a hire car at Pico do Areeiro. The picks are our reading of the listings, weighted by review counts and by what each price buys.

If You Are Only Booking One Tour

Our pick for a first-time visitor sleeping in Funchal is a west coast day, because the island's most distinctive scenery, the black-sand beach at Seixal, the Porto Moniz pools and the Fanal laurels, all sit on one route that is a long day for a driver new to the island. The Skywalk, Porto Moniz, Seixal & Fanal 4WD tour carries 9,799 platform reviews at 4.9, the largest sample among the land tours, and its pickup zone covers the central Funchal area and near the port. Book it for early in your stay, then use what you learned to plan the rest of the week with the 7 day itinerary.

What the Tour Price Buys, and What the Gate Charges

This section separates the two numbers in every row of the table: the tour price and the gate price. On Madeira the gap is usually large, because the island's headline sights are free or nearly free to enter and the tours are selling the seat, the driver and the schedule. Where the figures are our own arithmetic we say so, and where a judgement is ours we call it our reading.

Jeep Days: Almost Every Stop Is Free

Every jeep listing state plainly that no paid attraction is bundled. The Porto Moniz volcanic pools charge $3.44 (€3) per adult over 3 at the gate, Fanal publishes no entry fee, and the viewpoints and village stops cost nothing. So a jeep day at $79.00 to $80.00 buys a driver on the mountain roads, an open-top seat and hotel pickup, not access.

Our reading: that is fair value if you have no car or would rather not drive the mountain roads, and poor value if you have car hire and a confident driver, because the DIY cost is the $3.44 (€3) pool ticket plus fuel.

Trail Tours and the Permit Question

Every PR trail now needs a paid, pre-booked entry slot for non-residents, and the tours handle it differently. The PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço transfer is the only listing that includes the permit in the price. The PR1 hike transfer with permit help assists with the booking but the fee, $12.06 (€10.50) for the full crossing, is paid separately to the forestry institute.

The Pico do Arieiro sunrise hiking transfer is transport only and states the permit is the hiker's own responsibility. The guided levada walks, such as the Rabaçal Valley walk, say nothing about a permit in their inclusions, so budget your own SIMplifica booking at $5.17 (€4.50) a trail on top of the tour price.

Monte by Tuk-Tuk Against the Public Ticket Prices

The two tuk-tuk tours include different halves of Monte. The 2-hour tuk-tuk tour with cable car finale at $92.00 includes the cable car ride up but not the toboggan down. The Monte toboggan and Old Town tuk-tuk tour at $46.00 is a private group and includes the wicker toboggan itself.

Public prices for comparison: the Funchal to Monte cable car is $18.37 (€16) one way, and the toboggan is $34.40 (€30) for one person. The toboggan ends in Livramento, not where it starts, so on your own you need a ride onward. Our reading: the toboggan tour is the one that adds most for its price, because it bundles the ride with transport at both ends.

Boats: The One Thing You Cannot Do Yourself

The sea trips are the honest exceptions to the DIY argument. There is no public boat to the Desertas Islands, IFCN requires prior authorisation for any visit, and the Desertas catamaran day states that landing needs a separate permit and is not part of its cruise. Whale and dolphin watching is a boat or nothing, and the listings themselves say that watching from coastal viewpoints is far less reliable.

No listing on this page publishes a whale sighting rate, and we print none.

Pickup Zones and Meeting Points

Madeira tours from Funchal mostly collect you at your hotel, but the zones differ listing by listing, and the boat trips collect nobody. This table takes each meeting point straight from the listing's own text, so you can check your accommodation qualifies before booking rather than after.

Two patterns cover most listings. The minivan, jeep and transfer tours pick up across Funchal and often Caniço, sometimes wider, and the boat trips name a fixed marina berth. Cruise passengers should note the one listing that names the harbour explicitly.

Everything below comes from the meeting point field of each listing.

The PR1 Problem and the Tours That Solve It

The ridge walk from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo is the most requested hike on the island, and it has a logistics trap that no amount of enthusiasm fixes. This section explains it and names both listings built around it.

Since it reopened on 1 May 2026 the 6.1 km PR1 crossing has been two-way only as far as the Pedra Rija viewpoint. Past Pedra Rija it is one-way toward Pico Ruivo, and you leave the summit by a different path: PR1.1 down to Ilha or PR1.2 to Achada do Teixeira. IFCN provides no transport back to a car left at Pico do Areeiro.

The full crossing permit costs $12.06 (€10.50) for non-residents and is booked on SIMplifica for the same day or the next. The exits are covered on Pico Ruivo. So the walker's problem is a car on the wrong side of the mountain, and the transfer tours exist to solve exactly that.

The Pico do Arieiro sunrise hiking transfer, at $56.00, drops you for sunrise and later collects you at Achada do Teixeira, with the permit entirely your own arrangement. The sunrise and PR1 transfer with permit help, at $38.00, does the same collection and assists with the permit booking, though the fee is still paid separately. Without a transfer, the cost is the permit plus a car and a way back to it, which means a second driver or a pickup you arrange yourself.

The start is covered on Pico do Arieiro. Read the full fee structure on the trail fees page.

Cancellation, Weather and Small Print

The listings agree on one thing and differ on the rest. Every single one offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, but their weather policies and age rules are all over the place, so this section pulls the differences out where you can see them before paying.

Read the items below as the operator's own words, summarised. The uniform part first: every listing states free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. After that, the policies split, and on several boat and mountain tours the weather rules are the real booking condition.

Madeira Tours: Questions

Which are the best Madeira tours by reviews?

On the platform's own numbers, the ecological catamaran has the most reviews on this page, 10,714 at 4.6, and the Skywalk, Porto Moniz, Seixal and Fanal 4WD tour leads the land tours with 9,799 at 4.9. We compare listings, not companies, so treat those figures as sample sizes on one booking platform rather than a ranking of operators.

Do Madeira tours from Funchal include hotel pickup?

Most minivan, jeep and trail transfers do, across Funchal and often Caniço, and a few go wider, like the Rabaçal hiking transfer, which lists eight pickup locations from Funchal to Madalena do Mar. The boat trips from Funchal marina include no hotel pickup at all, so allow time to walk or taxi to the berth.

Which Madeira tours pick up at the cruise port?

Only one listing names the harbour in its pickup text: the full-day jeep tour with lunch, which collects in Funchal or Caniço and at Funchal harbor for cruise passengers. The Skywalk, Porto Moniz, Seixal & Fanal 4WD tour covers the central Funchal area and near the port, which may be walkable depending on your berth.

Are there private Madeira excursions?

Two listings state it explicitly: the Funchal Monte toboggan and Old Town tuk-tuk tour runs as a private group with hotel pickup, and the natural pools, Seixal & Fanal jeep day describes itself as semi-private. Everything else on this page is a shared small group unless the listing says otherwise.

Do I still need a trail permit if I book a levada tour?

Usually yes. Every PR trail needs its own advance SIMplifica booking, and only the PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço transfer includes the permit in its price. The guided walks and the other transfers leave the booking to you, and the fee is extra to the tour price.

Which Madeira 4x4 tour should I pick for the west coast?

Every jeep listing run eight hours to the north-west at $79.00 to $80.00 with the stops free or $3.44 (€3) at the pools. Our reading: pick by pickup zone and review sample, which favours the Skywalk, Porto Moniz, Seixal & Fanal 4WD tour for its port-area pickup and 9,799 reviews, or the semi-private jeep day if you want a smaller vehicle.

Book the West Coast 4WD Day

The Skywalk, Porto Moniz, Seixal and Fanal 4WD tour is the most-reviewed land tour on this page, $79.00 for eight hours with pickup in central Funchal and near the port, and it cancels free up to 24 hours before.
