Madeira Day Trips: Whales, the Desertas, the Sister Island and Canyons

These listings cover most budgets and most travellers. The two catamarans sit at $40.00, one with land-based spotters and one half an hour longer, while the small-group naturalist boat costs more and buys you a marine biologist or naturalist guide. Every one offers free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance.

Which Boat We Would Pick

Our pick is the responsible whale and dolphin watching tour at $69.00. It is the only one of the three with naturalist or marine biologist guides on board, and the listing says it runs under the operator's own animal welfare rules. If the budget matters more than the guide, the ecological catamaran is the better value: $40.00, land-based professional spotters, two decks and wheelchair-accessible toilets, and it is the listing that spells out the weather policy, cancelling with an alternative or a full refund when conditions are unsafe. The three-hour catamaran cruise matches the price and adds half an hour on the water, but prints no weather note at all, which is our reason to rank it third.

From the Shore

The whale listings above all name the free alternative themselves: watching from coastal viewpoints such as Ponta da Cruz or Garajau, and they add that sightings from land are far less reliable than from a boat. Two of them work with land-based professional spotters who direct the boat. Treat the shore as a bonus on a coastal walk rather than a plan.

No official sighting calendar or sighting rate is published, so nobody can honestly promise a species on a given date. The subject gets its own page at whale watching in Madeira.

Per IFCN, the reserve's managing authority, the islands are visited on private boats or licensed tourist boats, always with prior IFCN authorisation requested through the SIMplifica portal. The main visitor activity is a guided walk on an interpretive path followed by wildlife watching. There is no public ferry.

On this site, the Desertas full-day catamaran is $103.00 for 9 hours with lunch served on board, and free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance. The listing itself states that landing on the islands requires a separate permit and is not part of the cruise, so on this cruise you see the reserve from the boat rather than walking its path. In bad weather the operator offers an alternative or a full refund.

These are the Porto Santo Line 2026 prices for tourist class, taken from the operator's own price list and converted at €1 = $1.1481. They exclude the monthly fuel surcharge, which the operator adds at the month's rate. Children under 5 travel free but need a ticket.

The Crossing Time

The operator currently states the crossing takes 3 hours 15 minutes, and says this is for technical reasons. It prints no normal or shorter time, so we print none either. Our sum on that figure: two crossings take about six and a half hours, so a same-day return leaves you only a few hours on the island once you board, disembark and get to the beach.

Two better options follow from that. Either book the Porto Santo highlights 4x4 tour at $57.00 for 7 hours, which includes hotel pickup on Porto Santo so the few hours you have are used well, or stay overnight and let the ferry be a morning transfer. Binter also flies Madeira to Porto Santo, but the frequency is not stated anywhere we could read, so we cannot tell you how often.

Intermediate Canyoning Near Curral das Freiras

The Level 2 canyoning adventure is $66.00 for 4 hours, with transport from Funchal included, a certified guide, insurance, full equipment including shoes, and photos and videos. It involves jumps, slides and rappels down a canyon, and the listing asks guests over 50 to contact the operator before booking and requires good body mobility. One point in its favour: the operator states it runs rain or shine, so unlike the boat trips, rain does not cancel your day.

Tandem Paragliding Over the West Coast

The tandem paragliding flight is $212.00 for a booking lasting 1 hour, with around 20 minutes in the air, flown by a licensed instructor over Madeira's west coast. The listing includes the flight, a transfer from landing to take-off, safety equipment and insurance. There is no hotel pickup, the meeting point is given as Av. 1º de Fevereiro 90, and the group is a small one limited to a set number of passengers per day, so book ahead.

Two cautions straight from the listing: guests with a low fitness level are flagged as unsuitable, and no weather note is printed, because flights rest on the pilot's own judgement on the day. Free cancellation is up to 24 hours in advance.

Snorkelling at Ponta de São Lourenço

The Ponta de São Lourenço snorkelling boat trip is $46.00 for 2 hours and departs from Quinta do Lorde marina, with car parking directly at the marina and no hotel pickup, so you need your own way there or a hire car. Wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins and a guide are all included, and the listing calls it easy, suitable for confident swimmers with no diving certification needed. The limit is the same one that shapes every sea trip here: the operator states the tour is weather-dependent and conditions can change quickly.

The cliffs of the eastern tip, a Partial Natural Reserve nine kilometres long, are the setting.

Rodoeste charges by zones on its Funchal routes, and the on-board single is the number you need for a one-off day trip. Converted at €1 = $1.1481 from Rodoeste's own fare page.

Under SIGA, a day trip by bus means checking routes and times on the operators' own sites before you set out, and getting around Madeira explains how the pieces fit. Rodoeste runs the western routes and CAM the eastern ones. We do not reproduce timetables and we name no journey times, because the official pages should be your source on the day.

What the fares do tell you: our sum for the longest return, two tickets of up to 8 zones, is $13.78 (€12), against $79.00 for the Porto Moniz and Fanal 4WD tour. The bus is cheaper, and you carry the planning yourself. If you would rather drive, the expressways VE1 to VE4 and their tunnels are toll-free.

Funchal's own slopes give you the easiest half days on the island, and a boat or a shared transfer covers the rest. Pick by energy level: the cable car and gardens are gentle, the PR8 walk is the only one that needs hiking fitness.

• Monte by cable car: the Funchal to Monte cable car is $18.37 (€16) one way or $25.30 (€22) return, ages 7-14 half price and under 7 free, running daily 08:45-17:45 and closed Christmas Day.
• A two-hour whale watching boat: the responsible whale and dolphin watching tour is $69.00 for 2 hours from Funchal marina, the shortest guided sea trip on this page.
• The PR8 transfer, a long half day: the Caniçal transfer for the PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço hike is $36.00 for 6 hours per the listing, with the trail permit and a digital map included and the hike itself unguided. PR8 runs 4 km each way on the IFCN register.
• Câmara de Lobos: the town where Zarco first settled, with its xavelhas fishing boats in the cove, lies west of Funchal and pairs with Cabo Girão, which Visit Madeira puts at 580 m, with a suspended glass platform. Since 2025 the regional SIMplifica ticket for the Cabo Girão skywalk is $5.74 (€5) per adult, free for children 12 and under and Madeira residents, daily 08:00-20:00. • The Botanical Garden: ride the second cable car up from Monte, $12.63 (€11) one way, then entry to the Madeira Botanical Garden is $11.48 (€10) over 12 and $3.44 (€3) for ages 6-12, daily 09:00-18:00 with tickets until 17:30 and closed Christmas Day.

None of this is scaremongering. Each point below comes from an operator listing, an official fee rule, or a closure notice.

• The sea cancels boat trips. The ecological catamaran states plainly that unsafe weather means cancellation with an alternative or a full refund, and the Desertas catamaran says the same. Book your boat day early in your stay so you have spare days to rebook.
• Snorkelling depends on the sea too. The Ponta de São Lourenço listing states the tour is weather-dependent and that conditions can change quickly.
• Trails now need booking before you go. Since 1 January 2026 every classified PR route requires a prior SIMplifica booking, IFCN takes no bookings or payments at its offices, and refunds or rescheduling only apply if the authorities close or restrict the trail that day, requested within 10 working days. • São Vicente Caves are closed. Both the caves' own site and the municipal council state an indefinite closure for maintenance works, so cross it off any north-coast plan and substitute Porto Moniz or Seixal.
• The ferry crossing is longer than the map suggests. Porto Santo Line states 3 hours 15 minutes for technical reasons, so a day return to Porto Santo leaves few hours on the sand, and the prices also exclude a monthly fuel surcharge.
• Cloud swallows the peaks. The east tour listing notes that Pico do Areeiro can sometimes be obscured by cloud, and it does not promise a cancellation for it, so a white-out summit is a risk you accept when you book a mountain day. Check Madeira weather the night before.
