Best Time to Visit Madeira: Month by Month, Rain and Festivals

Rain Decides More Than Heat

The IPMA 1991-2020 normal for Funchal station 522 shows an average high of 19.9°C in February, the coolest month, and 26.8°C in August, the warmest. Every month of the year sits in that band, so you will never need a winter coat on a Funchal afternoon. The annual rain total is 574.3 mm, but it is not spread evenly. October, November, December and January carry 333.4 mm between them, 58 percent of the year's rain, our sum. June, July and August together carry 10.8 mm.

That is the real choice. Come in the October to January stretch and you should plan indoor alternatives for some days, not because it is cold but because showers are likely. Come between May and September and a washout day on the coast is unusual. The monthly detail is in Madeira weather by month.

The Peaks Are Not the Coast

Every figure on this page is a Funchal figure. That matters, because IPMA publishes no mountain normal for Madeira. Its 1991-2020 station list for the archipelago contains only Funchal and Porto Santo. There is no official temperature or rainfall figure for Pico do Arieiro, Pico Ruivo, Santana, the Paul da Serra plateau or any north-coast spot, and none can be printed from an official source.

In practice the mountains are cooler, wetter and often in cloud when Funchal is sunny. Pack layers and a rain shell for any trip above the coast in any month. If the summit is in cloud, the drive or transfer is still worth it on a clearer day, and Pico do Arieiro explains what to expect up there.

Trails Need a Booked Slot in Every Month

Since 1 January 2026 every classified walking trail on the island requires a booked slot through the SIMplifica system. The fee is $5.17 (€4.50) for most trails and $12.06 (€10.50) for the full PR1 crossing. Same-day and next-day bookings are possible, subject to availability. This applies in January exactly as in July, so the month you choose does not change the paperwork.

IFCN also closes trail sections on announced works days. An example already announced: the PR1 stretch from Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo is closed on 14-17 and 21-22 September 2026. December: The Wettest Month and the Brightest Streets

December averages 94.8 mm of rain over 8.6 rain days, the highest of any month, with an average high of 21.0°C and a low of 15.5°C. So the trade is rain showers against the island's biggest fixed event. The Christmas illumination of the Funchal amphitheatre runs from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, and the New Year's Eve firework display is on 31 December 2026.

Market night at the Mercado dos Lavradores falls on 23 December, with events in Funchal streets every day through the month. If a shower catches you, our rainy-day list has indoor options, and the daily programme around the lights gives you plenty to see between them.

January: Quiet Trails and Epiphany Chants

January averages a 20.0°C high, a 14.3°C low, 67.1 mm of rain and 6.2 rain days. After New Year the fixed calendar goes quiet, which in our reading makes it a calm month for walking the levadas without festival crowds. The one dated event is the Chants of Epiphany in the Municipal Gardens on 5 January 2027 at 19:00, open to the public.

The sea passage to the sister island is also cheaper in this stretch. The Porto Santo Line visitor adult round trip in tourist class costs $67.60 (€58.90) from January to March and October to December, against $82.70 (€72.02) from April to September, plus a monthly fuel surcharge. February: Carnival and the Coolest Average

February has the lowest average high of the year in Funchal, 19.9°C, with a 13.9°C low, 72.4 mm of rain and 5.5 rain days. The 2026 Carnival ran from 11 to 22 February downtown, with the Allegoric Parade on 14 February. The next edition is set for 3-14 February 2027, with the Allegoric Carnival Parade on 5 and 6 February 2027 and the satirical Slapstick Parade on 9 February 2027.

March: Mild and Manageable

March averages a 20.6°C high, a 14.3°C low, 62.3 mm of rain and 5.8 rain days in Funchal. There is no fixed regional festival this month on the official calendar, so in our reading it suits travellers who want the walking network without the parade dates. It is also the last month before the festival calendar takes over Funchal, which is one reason to give the levada walks the long days.

April: The Driest Spring Month and the Ultra Trail

April averages 45.2 mm over 4.7 rain days, with a 21.0°C high and a 14.9°C low. The 18th edition of the Madeira Island Ultra Trail runs on 24 and 25 April 2027, bringing runners and supporters to the island just before the Flower Festival opens.

The Flower Festival itself runs from 29 April to 30 May 2027. According to Visit Madeira, most events are free and only seated places to watch the Great Allegoric Flower Parade require a paid ticket. The programme and other dates are collected in Madeira events.

May: Flowers, Parades and 27.2 mm

May averages a 22.0°C high, a 16.2°C low, 27.2 mm of rain and 3.3 rain days. It is the first month of our best all-round stretch. The Flower Festival fills it: the Wall of Hope on 1 May, the Great Allegoric Flower Parade on 2 and 16 May 2027, plus flower group performances, a classic car parade and concerts through the month.

Come for the parades and you can also walk in the driest conditions the spring normal allows. Our reading is that May suits a mixed trip of walking and city events better than any other single month. Route ideas are in levada walks.

June: Fireworks Over the Bay

June averages a 23.7°C high, an 18.2°C low and just 7.8 mm of rain on 1.0 rain day. The Atlantic Festival runs 4-27 June 2027, and the official calendar lists the International Fireworks contest on 5, 12, 19 and 26 June 2027. The festival's own page describes the contest as three pyromusical shows of about 20 minutes each plus closing shows, so treat the contest-night count as to be confirmed against the calendar.

This is the second month of our best all-round stretch: dry on the coast, warm evenings, and a fireworks show to plan a week around. Days 25°C or more average 5.9 in June, rising fast after that.

July: The Driest Month with Gastronomy on Top

July averages 1.7 mm of rain on 0.3 rain days, a 25.4°C high and a 19.7°C low. Days reaching 25°C or more average 18.6, and tropical nights, where the temperature stays above 20°C, average 12.8. The Madeira Gastronomic Festival SAL runs 9-18 July 2027, and Classics at Magnolia sits on the calendar for 17 and 18 July 2027, while the event page gives different dates, so treat those as to be confirmed.

August: The Hottest Month and the Wine Festival Opening

August averages a 26.8°C high, a 20.7°C low and 1.3 mm of rain on 0.4 rain days, the driest and hottest month in the normal. Days of 25°C or more average 28.0 and tropical nights average 23.4, so book a room with air conditioning if heat affects your sleep.

The Madeira Wine Festival opens on 22 August 2027 and runs to 12 September, with the Wine Lounge, folklore week and tastings in Funchal and the vineyards. September: Warm, Busy and Built Around Wine

September averages a 26.6°C high, a 20.4°C low, 23.1 mm of rain and 3.1 rain days, with 26.6 days of 25°C or more. It is the third month of our best all-round stretch. The 2026 Wine Festival ran from 23 August to 13 September, with the Live Harvest in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos on 12 September. The next edition runs 22 August to 12 September 2027. The Columbus Festival on Porto Santo runs 17-20 September 2026, and 23-26 September in 2027.

October: Warm but Wet, with the Nature Festival

October averages a 25.2°C high and a 19.2°C low, with 91.2 mm of rain on 7.0 rain days, and 18.1 days of 25°C or more. That makes it warmer on the coast than June, and our pick for travellers who want warm air and accept the shower risk. The Madeira Nature Festival runs 6-11 October 2026, a programme of nature sports in the mountains, valleys and sea.

One dated road note: the forest road from Eira do Serrado to Pico do Areeiro closes on 4 October 2026 from 07:55 to 10:08 for a rally stage. Plan summit mornings accordingly. Pico do Arieiro covers access in normal conditions.

November: The Quiet Month Before the Lights

November averages a 22.8°C high, a 17.0°C low, 80.3 mm of rain and 7.3 rain days. No fixed regional festival appears on the official calendar this month. In our reading that makes November the island's calmest stretch: mild air, fewer fixed dates, and accommodation around Funchal easier to find than during festival weeks.

It is also the start of the cheaper ferry season. The Porto Santo Line visitor round trip drops to $67.60 (€58.90) from October to December. If you time the trip to the end of the month, the Christmas illumination switches on from 1 December 2026.

First Light on Pico do Arieiro

The table below shows sunrise and sunset on Pico do Arieiro on the 15th of four representative months. These are our own computation in local clock time, not an official published figure. In winter the sun rises after 08:00, which is why the Pico do Arieiro sunrise tour is popular in the darker months, and in June the days run long enough for big walking days.
