Madeira Hotels: How to Choose the Best Base and Type

The Two Zones Side by Side

Both zones sit on the same Aerobus line from the airport, so the difference is minutes, not routes. On the Lido side you trade the old town's streets for sea-water pools and the walk to Praia Formosa. In the centre you trade the pools for markets, the cable car and restaurants at the door.

Outside Funchal

Caniço, in Santa Cruz municipality, sits close to the airport and charges its own ecotaxa, but no Aerobus serves it, so you would rely on car hire in Madeira or the CAM eastern buses. The west around Calheta and Câmara de Lobos and the north coast around São Vicente work as car bases for walkers and repeat visitors who want quieter evenings. The Funchal Bathing Complexes

Funchal's five municipal bathing complexes, run by the Frente MarFunchal company, are the closest thing to a managed beach day: Lido, Ponta Gorda, Barreirinha, the Praia Formosa complex and Doca do Cavacas. The Lido is built over the sea on several levels with a seawater pool, children's pools and a guarded beach. Entry costs $6.89 (€6) per adult, with a reduced $2.30 (€2) rate for ages 7 to 17 and free entry for children 6 and under with an adult.

A sunbed adds $2.87 (€2.50). Praia Formosa itself, the largest rolled-pebble beach at 2 km, is free to access, gains black sand areas in the bathing season, and is lifeguarded in season with showers, WCs and parking. Five Funchal spots held Blue Flags in 2026, including Formosa, Lido, Ponta Gorda and Barreirinha.

If You Need Real Sand

For a long sand beach the honest answer is Porto Santo, the neighbouring island, where the golden sand runs 9 km and the Fontinha section holds a Blue Flag. It is a ferry or short flight away, and it deserves its own trip, which we cover in Porto Santo.

The National Star Scale

Hotels and aparthotels carry the Portuguese 1 to 5 star scale under Decreto-Lei 39/2008, adapted to Madeira by regional decree DLR 12/2009/M as amended by DLR 19/2017/M. Madeira runs no separate star system. A star rating speaks about facilities and service requirements, not about views or location, so read it alongside the map.

Quintas da Madeira

Quintas da Madeira is a regional classification under DLR 12/2009/M for tourist enterprises built around one or more pre-existing properties of heritage, architectural or artistic value that reflect Madeira's historic identity. In practice it is the label to look for when you want an old estate house rather than a modern block, and it is still a licensed tourist enterprise with the same tax rules as a hotel.

Alojamento Local and Hostels

Alojamento Local covers private accommodation under the national regime of Decreto-Lei 128/2014, as amended, in four modalities: moradia (a detached house), apartamento, estabelecimento de hospedagem (rooms establishments, which may call themselves a hostel when dormitory guests outnumber room guests) and quartos, rooms in the host's own home capped at three units. Except for quartos and hostels, an AL unit is limited to 9 bedrooms and 27 guests. Every AL unit must display a registration number in the format NNNNNN/AL, booking platforms must show that number, and you can verify it free on the RNAL search.

Families: Do the Capacity Math First

For an AL apartment or house, capacity is bedrooms x 2 plus two more guests in the living room, and convertible or extra beds may reach 50% of fixed beds. That formula tells you whether a listing claiming six sleepers is legal or stretched. Families also save on tax: children 12 and under are exempt from the Calheta tourist tax, and children under 13 are exempt from the Santa Cruz ecotaxa per its amendment text published in Diário da República.

In Funchal the bathing complexes charge youth 7 to 17 only $2.30 (€2) and under-6s enter free with an adult, which makes a Lido-side base cheap on swimming days. Our Madeira with kids page collects the rest.

• Under-13s travel tax-free in Calheta and Santa Cruz, not in Funchal, where the FAQ sets no age exemption
• Family hotel lists online are unranked marketing, no official tag exists

Couples and the Boutique Question

For character, the Quintas da Madeira label is the only official marker of a property of heritage or artistic value, so search for it on the RNET register rather than trusting the word boutique. Location does the rest. The old town puts you beside the cable car and the painted-door streets, while the Estrada Monumental strip carries the island's top dining: the 2026 MICHELIN Guide lists the one-starred William inside a hotel on Estrada Monumental, and Desarma with one star on the terrace of a hotel on Rua das Maravilhas.

Who Charges What

Funchal charges $2.30 (€2) per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, a maximum of $16.07 (€14) per continuous stay, in force since 1 October 2024, on all paid stays in tourist enterprises and Alojamento Local. Calheta charges the same rate and cap. Santa Cruz, which includes Caniço and the airport area, charges its Ecotaxa Turística at the same rate and cap per its 2022 amendment text.

No other municipality's tax could be confirmed on an official page, so treat any other figure as unverified and check the booking total.

Worked Examples

Our sum, two adults in Funchal for 7 nights: 2 x 7 x $2.30 (€2) = $32.10 (€28), which exactly hits the cap. Our sum, two adults for 10 continuous nights in Funchal: the cap still applies, so the tax is $32.10 (€28) and nights 8 to 10 are free of tax. If a stay is interrupted and resumed, the 7-night cap resets per continuous stretch.

The List

The register check is the one most travellers skip and the only one that protects you from an illegal listing. The transport checks matter because the island is steep and bus coverage thins fast outside Funchal.

• 1. Look the property up free on Turismo de Portugal's registers, hotels and quintas on the RNET search and apartments by their NNNNNN/AL number on the RNAL search
• 2. Read the tax line on the booking total, because the tourist tax adds $2.30 (€2) per person per night in three confirmed municipalities
• 3. Check the Aerobus stop minutes against the hotel address, 35 to 50 minutes for the Lido strip, 22 to 24 for the centre
• 4. Check the pickup zone of any Madeira tours you plan, for example the Porto Moniz jeep tour collects at any hotel in Funchal city while the Skywalk and Fanal 4WD tour collects in central Funchal and near the port
• 5. Plan to bring a passport or ID card, because accommodation must report foreign guests on the SIBA system within 3 working days
• 6. If the hotel sits near trailheads such as Pico do Arieiro or Levada das 25 Fontes, price car hire in Madeira first, buses cannot reach most trail starts at dawn, and check trail fees
