Children Need a Trail Booking Too

The IFCN exemption for minors aged 12 or under waives the fee, not the booking. Since the start of 2026 every classified trail requires a prior booking through the SIMplifica portal exclusively, and IFCN takes no bookings or payments at its own offices. Each day is split into capacity-limited entry slots, with roughly 15 minutes of tolerance generally allowed.

You Are Personally Responsible on the Trail

Article 11 of DLR 24/2022/M of 19 December says users of walking trails are personally and exclusively responsible for any material or human damage during their use. The text is quoted on the SIMplifica service page and ticked in the booking form. With children, that means you judge the drops and the footing, not the authority.

Narrow levada ledges with long falls are common on the island's most photographed routes.

PR1 Has No Return Transport Laid On

PR1 runs two ways only between Pico do Areeiro and the Pedra Rija viewpoint at kilometre 1.2. Past Pedra Rija it is one-way towards Pico Ruivo, and IFCN lays on no return transport, so a family that walks the full route needs its own lift back from Achada do Teixeira or Ilha. IFCN's FAQ also says hiring a guide is not mandatory on any classified trail, which means the arrangements are yours.

Tour Minimum Ages Are Printed by the Operators

The tours we list carry their own age rules. The Pico do Arieiro sunrise transfer is listed as not suitable for children under 5. The Rabaçal Valley and 25 Fountains hike is listed as not suitable for children under 8, and the same listing calls the walking moderate with narrow levada paths and uneven footing.

Check the card before you book, because a minimum age on a listing is binding at checkout even when the trail itself is free for children.

The Toboggan Quits in the Rain

The Monte toboggan runs Monday to Saturday, 09:00-18:00, and does not sell online, so tickets are bought on the spot on the day. The operator states there are no 3-person rides in rain or on wet ground, and that rides may close early on high demand or bad weather. A family of four should plan on two sleds of two, and remember the run ends in Livramento rather than central Funchal.

Car Seats Are National Law

Portuguese law requires children under 12 years old and under 135 cm tall to travel in an approved child restraint suited to their height and weight. The obligation ends once either threshold is passed, so a tall 10-year-old may be out of the seat while a small 12-year-old is not. Fines run from €120 to €600 per child.

The Lido and the Funchal Complexes

The Lido is built over the sea on several levels, with a guarded beach, first aid, a seawater swimming pool, children's pools, bathhouses and a bar, open all year. Entry is $6.89 (€6). Children 6 and under enter free with an adult and ages 7 to 17 pay $2.30 (€2) with proof.

Sunbeds and parasols are extra. The same Frente MarFunchal tariff covers Ponta Gorda, Barreirinha and Doca do Cavacas, and the company sells a one-day entry to any complex online.

Praia Formosa

Praia Formosa is the largest rolled-pebble beach on the island at 2 km, with free access and lifeguards during the bathing season. Several areas of black sand appear in season. Showers, WCs, parking and a defibrillator are on site.

It is the easiest free beach afternoon from central Funchal.

Porto Moniz Pools

The municipal pool complex at Porto Moniz has lifeguards on constant duty, a children's pool, a playground and a first aid post, and it opens all year, 09:00-17:00 in winter and 09:00-19:00 in summer. Entry is $3.44 (€3) for anyone over 3, free for 3 and under. The free alternative in the same village is the Piscinas Naturais do Aquário, also called the Cachalote pools, next to the Madeira Aquarium, which the council lists with free access.

Machico and Porto Santo Sand

Banda d'Além at Machico is about 70 m of imported golden sand, one of few of its kind on the island, with a lifeguard in the bathing season, changing cabins and walkways. Porto Santo's beach runs 9 km of golden sand, and the municipality says the sand is biogenic rather than quartz. It is the island's proper sand-castle beach, reached by ferry.

Machico's municipal tourism page puts average sea water at 22°C in summer and 18°C in winter.

The Full Monte Day

The Funchal-Monte cable car charges adults $18.37 (€16) one way and takes children 7-14 at half price, while ages 0-6 ride free. Monte Palace Tropical Garden admits adults at $20.70 (€18) and children up to 14 free with an adult. The toboggan is priced per sled, so a family of four buys two 2-person sleds at $45.90 (€40) each.

A Cheaper Swap

Swap the toboggan for the garden side of the hill and the day costs far less. From Monte, the Botanical Garden cable car charges $12.63 (€11) per adult one way and $6.89 (€6) per child aged 7 to 14, and the Botanical Garden itself charges $11.48 (€10) per visitor over 12 and $3.44 (€3) for ages 6 to 12, free under 6. For two adults and two children aged 8 and 10 that is our sum of $39.00 (€34) on the cable car and $29.90 (€26) at the garden, so $68.90 (€60) against the $91.80 (€80) two toboggan sleds cost.

What the Trio Costs

For two adults and two children aged 5 to 14, our sums come to the figures below. The pools charge $3.44 (€3) per person over 3. The aquarium in the São João Baptista fort, which holds more than 90 native species in 12 tanks, charges adults $8.04 (€7) and juniors $4.59 (€4).

Ciência Viva, the hands-on science centre, charges adults $4.02 (€3.50) and children $2.87 (€2.50), with under 5s free.

Getting There With Children

The three paid attractions sit in the same village, so a family can do all three in a morning and swim in the afternoon. The road there from Funchal crosses the island and takes most of the outward half of the day, which is our reason for treating Porto Moniz as a full day rather than a stop. If you would rather not drive it, the Skywalk, Porto Moniz, Seixal and Fanal 4WD tour covers the northwest from Funchal with pickup included, though its listing prints no minimum age, so ask the operator before booking with a toddler.

On the same coast, the Achadas da Cruz cable car drops to a farming terrace by the sea for $3.44 (€3) one trip, and the council publishes no hours for it.

What Is Inside

The Two Operators' Own Printed Rules

Rota dos Cetáceos charges adults $68.90 (€60) from age 12, $40.20 (€35) for ages 6-11, and children up to 5 free. The trip lasts 2.5 hours and carries a sighting guarantee, a free repeat trip if no cetaceans are seen. Ventura do Mar charges adults $59.70 (€52) and $34.40 (€30) for kids aged 5-10, with under 4s free.

Note a small gap in Ventura do Mar's own printed copy, which leaves a 4-year-old between the free band and the paid band, so ask before booking a 4-year-old.

The Listed Tours

The ecological catamaran dolphin and whale watching trip is a 2.5 hour electric-assisted catamaran sailing with two decks, wheelchair-accessible toilets and unlimited access to the outdoor nets area, at $40.00 as listed by the operator. The responsible whale and dolphin watching tour is a 2 hour small-group boat with naturalist or marine biologist guides at $69.00 as listed. Neither listing prints a minimum age.

Both depart from Funchal marina.

Weather Cancels

The catamaran listing states that if weather conditions are unsafe the tour is canceled and guests are offered an alternative or a full refund. Book early in your stay so a weather cancellation leaves room to rebook, and keep free cancellation in mind, which both listed tours carry up to 24 hours in advance. No Official Grades or Durations

IFCN publishes no trail durations and no difficulty grades for the classified network. If a website quotes you a walking time, it is not IFCN's figure. The only sanctioned printed durations come from other sources, and each should be named as theirs.

The PR6.1 Risco Conflict

Visit Madeira calls PR6.1, the Levada do Risco, an easy 1.5 km each way, estimated at 2 hours, and ideal for the whole family. The IFCN register, which is the managing authority, lists PR6.1 at 3 km with a 3 km return. The two official sources disagree on the distance, so treat the family label as the tourism board's view and the 3 km as the register's figure.

The IFCN trailhead board gives a lowest point of 1000 m on this route, and the walk is a mountain one whatever the label says.

Free and Easy Green Space

The Parque Ecológico do Funchal is free, opens daily 08:30-19:00 at both entrances and closes only for bad weather. It is the no-booking, no-drop walking option for toddlers. The Gaps

• Aquaparque in Santa Cruz: the operator's own price page renders its prices as images that could not be read as text, so no euro figure is published here. Widely repeated blog figures exist but are not confirmed on an official page.
• CR7 Museum in Funchal: the operator's own site did not render readable price text, so a verified child price is not published here.
• Madeira Story Centre: the municipal Visit Funchal page lists entry as paid but prints no adult or child price and no child age band.
• Horários do Funchal buses: a child on-board fare of about half the adult fare exists in the official tariff PDF, but neither the PDF nor the fares page states the exact child age band or a free-travel age.
• Madeira Aquarium, Porto Moniz: no free-entry age under 5 is published, the price table simply starts at the 5-14 junior band.
• MUDAS museum in Calheta: the regional culture portal lists children as free but prints no exact age cutoff.
