What To See In Ribeira Brava Town
Beyond the museum, Ribeira Brava keeps three things close together: the parish church, the fort that now houses the tourist office, and the seafront bathing complex. All three sit within a short walk of each other, and the stream that gave the town its name runs between them.
São Bento Church, The Igreja Matriz
Visit Madeira calls São Bento Church an important monument in the region, exhibiting architectural, historical and artistic heritage. No build date is given on the official page, so we will not invent one. It is the most photogenic stop in the centre.
Forte De São Bento And The Tourist Office
The fort was built in 1708 to protect the coast from corsair attacks, and today it houses the tourist information office at Forte de São Bento, 9350-213 Ribeira Brava. The Seafront And The Bathing Complex
The Ribeira Brava Bathing Complex offers swimming pools, changing rooms, a bar, a sun lounger area and access to the sea, according to Visit Madeira. The beach itself is on the ABAE Blue Flag list for 2026 as Ribeira Brava, pack B. Entry prices for the complex are not published on any official page, so treat the bathing complex as a free or cheap stop and check locally. It is one of the quieter swimming spots on this stretch of coast, protected by the harbour mouth.

Fajã Dos Padres And Calhau Da Lapa
Two small coastal spots under the cliffs of Campanário parish belong to Ribeira Brava municipality, and both are reached the hard way: down a cliff or by boat. That is exactly why they stay special.
Fajã Dos Padres
Fajã dos Padres sits on a strip of land at the foot of a 300 m cliff, and Visit Madeira states plainly that it is reached only by cable car or boat. Its own site describes a modern cable car that descends the 300 m of cliff. Hours are 10:00-20:30 from 27 June to 13 September, and 10:00-18:00 the rest of the year.
The fare is not published on the site, so budget for a surprise and check at the top station. No booking is stated as required.
Calhau Da Lapa
Calhau da Lapa, also in Campanário, is a small coastal hamlet reached by a steep path or by boat, again per Visit Madeira. There is no cable car here, so bring proper shoes and water for the descent. The reward is a quiet pebble shore with no through traffic.
It pairs well with a morning at the museum or an afternoon swim, and it costs nothing to reach on foot.

Our pick: Fajã dos Padres if you want the easiest dramatic arrival and somewhere to eat, Calhau da Lapa if you want solitude and do not mind the climb back. Neither is served by the town's bus lines, so most visitors come by car, taxi or boat.

Encumeada: The Pass Above The Valley
The road out of Ribeira Brava climbs to the Boca da Encumeada pass at 1,007 m, where Visit Madeira says you can see both the north and south coasts over the Ribeira Brava and São Vicente valleys. On a clear day it is one of the best viewpoints on the island, and it changes the whole shape of your mental map of Madeira.

This pass is a trail hub, but several routes are currently restricted, so check before you plan a walk. The IFCN classified-trail register shows the following picture. Come early, do the museum when it opens at 09:30 Tuesday to Friday, walk the church and the fort, then continue up to the Encumeada pass or west to Calheta and Porto Moniz. In that shape, the town costs you two to three hours and adds the one museum on the island that explains its rural interior.
If you are based here instead, the town works as a quiet anchor. Morning bus or car to the museum, afternoon cable car down to Fajã dos Padres or a walk down to Calhau da Lapa, and a swim at the bathing complex before dinner. For levada walking, the transfer to Rabaçal picks up in the town centre, which means you can hike the 25 Fontes valley without renting a car at all.
