Calheta, Madeira: The Sand Beach, the MUDAS Museum and the Road to Rabaçal

Is The Sand Real

No, and the municipality says so openly. The bathing area is formed of two artificial inlets separated by a small bay open to the Atlantic, and the golden sand was imported from Morocco. It is real sand, just not local sand.

The beach sits on Avenida D. Manuel I, which the municipality describes as about 30 minutes from Funchal. Entry is free all year. The official bathing season runs 1 June to 30 September, when the beach has full staffing and equipment.

The beach first flew the Blue Flag for the 2021 season, and Calheta appears again on the official 2026 Blue Flag list published by ABAE.

Facilities You Get For Free

The council lists changing rooms, accessible toilets, a first aid room, bars, restaurants, parking, lifeguard towers, showers, a recycling point, a games area and public telephones. The paid part is only the rentals, shown below with the municipal figures.

Hours And The Building

The museum is at Estrada Simão Gonçalves da Câmara 37 and opens Tuesday to Saturday, 09:30-13:00 and 14:00-17:30. It closes Sunday, Monday and public holidays. The building is the Casa das Mudas, designed by architect Paulo David, and it sits above the sea at 196 m.

The Contemporary Art Museum moved here from Funchal's São Tiago fortress, where it had been since 1992, in 2015. There is a documentation centre on site whose hours differ from the galleries, so do not rely on them for your visit.

Ticket Prices

Tickets are cheap by mainland museum standards and the family deal is generous, covering at least one adult and one minor. Groups of more than 6 pay the reduced rate per person.

The Closed Road And The Shuttle

The regional road ER105 between Encumeada and Rabaçal is closed to traffic, so you cannot drive over the top from the north. The municipality's own route advice from the south is the VR1 toward Ribeira Brava, then the VE3 toward Ponta do Sol and Calheta, first exit at the Arco da Calheta roundabout onto the ER222, then follow signs to Rabaçal past Loreto. The Câmara Municipal da Calheta runs a transport service to the Posto Florestal do Rabaçal, the forestry post about 2 km from the start of the route, costing $5.74 (€5) one way and $9.18 (€8) return.

Public toilets exist at the forestry post and nowhere else along the route. The municipality recommends starting at Rabaçal on the ER105 rather than the Caldeira end, for mobility and parking.

The PR6 Trail Rules And Fees

PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes runs 4.3 km each way from Rabaçal to the springs, and the IFCN register states the whole trail now uses controlled one way circulation: out along the levada, back on the alternative section called the Bypass. Non-resident visitors pay $5.17 (€4.50) per classified trail, booked on SIMplifica, and bookings can be made for the same day or later. IFCN publishes no maximum advance window.

Residents and children 12 and under enter free but must still book. The IFCN trailhead board gives 3h for PR6 and 2h for the Risco branch, without saying one-way or return.

Tours That Skip The Parking Problem

If you would rather not deal with the road and the shuttle, three operator tours reach Rabaçal from Funchal. The Rabaçal Valley and the 25 Fountains Hike is a guided half day at $55.00, the Rabaçal: 25 Fontes & Risco Levada Hiking Transfer at $50.00 is a transfer with a map for self guided walking, and the Guided Levada Walk in the Rabaçal Valley at $55.00 is a full day. Tour listings never define trail fees, so check whether the IFCN fee is included before you book.

The Fishing And Surf Coast

Visit Madeira describes Paul do Mar as a fishing community sheltered by tall rocky cliffs, popular with surfers for its wave and ocean conditions and known for its fish. Jardim do Mar is confirmed as one of the eight parishes, and Visit Madeira publishes no further detail about its facilities. One warning from the official trail register: PR20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar, 1.9 km from Prazeres down to the village, is listed closed by IFCN.

PR19 Caminho Real do Paul do Mar, 1.8 km from Prazeres to Paul do Mar, is open.

Ponta Do Pargo

The southwestern tip of Madeira has relatively flat terrain by the island's standards. Visit Madeira names the Garganta Funda viewpoint here, with a waterfall on one side and the ocean on the other, and confirms a historic lighthouse. No visiting hours or fee for the lighthouse are published on the official page, so treat a visit as an outside stop.

Bus Without A Car

Rodoeste runs line 80 from Funchal to Porto Moniz via Calheta and line 142 from Funchal to Ponta do Pargo through Calheta. Treat these line numbers as indicative and check rodoeste.com.pt before you travel. On board single fares on Funchal routes are $1.49 (€1.30) for 1 zone, $2.53 (€2.20) for 2 zones, $3.16 (€2.75) for 3 zones and $6.89 (€6) up to 8 zones.

Car And Where To Sleep

The municipality's own directions to Rabaçal use the VR1 and VE3 from Funchal, the same corridor you would use for the town itself. If you are renting, compare options on our car hire Madeira page. If you stay the night, note the municipal tourist tax: $2.30 (€2) per person per night for up to 7 consecutive nights, in force since 1 October 2024 in hotels, tourist apartments, rural tourism, campsites and Alojamento Local.

• Engenhos da Calheta, one of Madeira's oldest working sugar cane mills, appears on Visit Madeira's Calheta page, but no official page publishes confirmed opening hours, so do not plan a tight slot around it (Visit Madeira).
• The town area has four named beaches per Visit Madeira, not one: Calheta, Galinhas, Portinho and Porto (Visit Madeira).

Three Routings

Each routing assumes you arrive with the day ahead of you. The museum closes at 17:30 with a 13:00-14:00 lunch break, and the beach staffing runs through the bathing season.

Because the municipality states the town is about 30 minutes from Funchal, most visitors arrive mid morning. The natural split is sand before lunch and culture after: the beach needs no booking, and MUDAS reopens at 14:00 after its midday break, staying open until 17:30 Tuesday to Saturday. Mountain days work differently. The Rabaçal trailhead sits high above the town, the road over the top is closed, and the council shuttle plus the SIMplifica booking are the two steps people forget. Give the PR6 out and back, 4.3 km each way per the IFCN register, the whole day if you are driving yourselves. Guided options such as the Guided Levada Walk in the Rabaçal Valley remove the driving entirely and pick up from Funchal area hotels.
